If you are an advertiser, then radio advertising in the Seattle-Tacoma market may be a great value because of the long commute times.
From 1990 to the year 2000 the commute times increased 16.7% That is a monster increase, and put simply, it means more time in the car for most people and more time listening to radio.
9% of the population in the Seattle-Tacoma market spend 60 minutes or more commuting. 31% spend 30-59 minutes. 37% of the population spend 15 to 29 minutes.
Here is when to advertise based on when people are commuting:
- 14% of the market is commuting between 12:00 AM and 5:59 AM
- 20% of the commuters are on the road between the hour of 6:00 AM and 6:59 AM
- A wooping 27% are commuting between 7:00 AM and 7:59 AM
- 15% are behind the wheel between the hour of 8:00 AM and 8:59AM
- 24% are spread over the day between 9:00AM and 11:59 PM.
In addition, 4.8% use public transportation. This means people are in their car and listening to radio. An effective radio campaign will in most cases consist of buying 3-5 stations within the market. Stations share listeners, so by advertising on more than one station you reach them wherever they are. You need to focus on your market and the stations that reach your target market.
Because drive time is so important in this market, it is best to purchase as far in advance as possible. In addition, be prepared to reject the first offer given by a sales rep. We like buying unsold inventory, and with the exception of certain times of the year, there is always unsold inventory available.
